How Does Your Windsor Home’s Water Heater Work?

Posted on: October 9, 2014

Having clean and reliable hot water is critical to having a healthy and comfortable home.  For that, you can thank your home’s hot water heater.  So much of your routine depends on your hot water heater, though you might not even realize it: from your warm shower in the morning to running the dish washer after the evening’s dinner, American families use hot water all day long.

That’s why it’s so important to know how your water heater works!  Understanding your own equipment is a major step in the right direction for somebody hoping to get the most out of their home’s plumbing system and the least out of utility bills!

We’ve put together a basic review of the different types of water heaters and how they work.  You can check your own device and see what you have, then refer to this guide.  The main water heater types are as follows:

  • Conventional Water Heater– For decades, conventional, tank-type water heating was really the only available form of water heating out there — and now, even though the market has changed, many homeowners still have these products because they came with the house! Conventional water heaters store water in a 40 gallon tank, so you can recognize them simple by the size of the device and the space they take up.
  • Tankless Water Heaters- The more advanced form of water heating is tankless, and lately it’s been gaining ground due to its significantly higher efficiency rates.  In these units, water is never stored: rather, it is heated on demand in a series of coils.  Hot water from a tankless is “endless,” since there’s no stored water to run out of.  These units are significantly smaller — about the size of a carry on suitcase — and they’re installed on the wall.
  • Hybrid Water Heaters- As the name implies, these water heaters combine tank-type and tankless technology: by shrinking the storage tank size to just a few gallons, a hybrid water heater can deliver instant hot water as soon as you open the tap and ensure that your hot water never runs out by heating it inside the unit.  These devices are standing, but they are typically much smaller than conventional heater sizes.
