Fort Collins Electrician: Why You Should Upgrade Your Electrical Panel

Posted on: November 21, 2014

Fuse Panels are Outdated and Unsafe

Pop quiz: When was the original patent for the first electrical panel introduced? Believe it or not, it was back in 1885 by Thomas Edison. Why do we ask?

Well, because it just shows how old fuse panels are and while we aren’t suggesting that the one in your home is nearly 130 years old, we do think it’s possible that yours is extremely outdated.

Though the fuse panel has been upgraded over time, it still has not been used in new constructions since the 1960s. If your home was built prior to that point, you could be living with an old, potentially dangerous fuse box.

There are two things you need to look out for to determine if it’s finally the time to upgrade: frequent flickering lights, or arcing. Arcing is a surge in electricity that can send incorrect voltages around your home. You will recognize arcing by the electrical sound coming from inside the unit. When this happens, appliances will not function properly. They will either get less power and not work at all, or they will get too much and overload, putting you at risk for a fire.

With this knowledge, it should be clear that you can’t risk living with an old fuse panel anymore. But, in case you need more convincing, we’ve put together another list of benefits.

Benefits of Upgrading Your Electrical Panel

  1. Insurance incentives: Insurance companies know the risk fuse panels carry and may not cover you or your home if you have one installed. It’s definitely not worth that risk.
  2. Safety: Surely you don’t want to continue having your family live in a home that is always as risk for a fire. Upgrading your fuse panels is an easy way to ensure their safety.
  3. Higher home resale value: Potential buyers would rather see upgraded circuit breakers, as opposed to old, outdated fuse panels. Make your home more appealing – it can’t hurt!

Make your home a safer place to live by upgrading your electrical panel. Call Lighten Up Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric for more information or to schedule an appointment today!
