Battery Backup Sump Pump Fort Collins

Houses Prone to Power Outages May Benefit From a Backup Pump

Sump pumps are your first line of defense against basement flooding, but what happens when something goes wrong with it in the midst of a big rainstorm? That’s when it’s a good idea to have a battery backup sump pump.

While a battery-powered backup system is the most popular type, there are also water-powered pumps available. A water-powered pump can operate when there is no power, but they don’t remove as much water. Plus, their performance and efficiency are directly related to the amount of water pressure in your home. If the pressure goes too low, then the water-powered pump will be unable to remove enough water to keep your basement dry.

The one you will need really depends on the area in which you live, and how prone your home is to flooding. But, in order to properly decide whether or not a battery-powered backup pump is your best option, there are a few factors you should consider.

Do You Need a Battery Backup Sump Pump?

  1. If you have a finished basement, or you use that space of your home for storage on the floor, then you should have a battery-powered backup. If you use shelf space for your storage, or your basement is empty, then you don’t have as glaring a need.
  2. Power outages are another big concern. If you experience power loss a few times a year, or even once every few years, then you should have a battery backup. However, if you have a whole home generator, your home should be pretty well protected from outages, and a backup won’t be necessary immediately.
  3. Another huge factor is the age of your present pump. If it is five to ten years old, then you should have a battery-powered backup. If it is five years old or younger, then you can probably wait, although you should still think about purchasing a backup eventually.
